To the executive board of the RSPCA,
I call on the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) to abolish the Assured scheme, which is failing in its promise to protect farmed animals. Investigations conducted by Animal Rising and Animal Justice Project have uncovered shocking scenes of animal cruelty across farms certified under your scheme. Footage from over 45 RSPCA Assured farms showed animals suffering in distressing conditions—animals with untreated infections, missing body parts, and individuals left to die slowly among their peers. This stands in stark contradiction to the ‘high welfare’ claims made by the Assured scheme.
The RSPCA must not continue to endorse practices that lead to extreme suffering, legal violations and factory-style farming under the guise of ‘higher welfare’ standards.
Despite assurances of more compassionate treatment, over 280 breaches of welfare laws were documented, proving that the system is fundamentally flawed. As long as the Assured scheme exists, the public is misled into believing they are supporting animal welfare, while in reality, they are funding cruelty.
I ask the RSPCA to act in alignment with its mission: to lead by example in protecting animals by promoting a kinder plant-based future.
A transition toward plant-based agriculture not only eliminates suffering but also aligns with global efforts to mitigate climate change, the loss of wild animals and their homelands, and create a sustainable food system.
The RSPCA’s name holds immense public trust. To truly honour that trust and live up to your name, you must abandon welfare-washing practices and take a bold stand against all forms of animal cruelty and exploitation. The time has come to move beyond outdated systems of farming animals and lead with compassion towards a plant-based future.
Yours respectfully
